We got a runner!!
Today I had just about the worst time in the competition arena as I've ever had.
This is not a flame to change anything, but more of some advice. Always bring a snare of some kind with you. We got paired up against a team of 4 with a ranger on it. We killed the rest of his team in about 2 minutes, but he started running. We had a really really weak necro, a smiter/healer monk, myself, a prot/healer monk, and another class. So right after we kill the party of enemies, the ranger starts running. We simply couldn't kill him with his troll unguent running. I personally had no offense and my wand to attack, the necro was specced really poorly, because he simply couldn't damage the ranger, and the smiter just couldn't do anything to kill the guy either.
The 4th member of our group split pretty much straight away. We chased this poor fool for 29 minutes in the arena until we gave up and finally quit, giving them the victory. If just one of us had a snare of some sort, this probably wouldn't have been an issue, either that or diversion to shut down his skills. But man oh man, what a helpless feeling. Always bring a ranger/runner counter into your build for random arenas, lest this become a build of resilance that rangers pick up to frustrate us to no end with more 29 minute long battles of The Tyria 500 race.

You think this is bad? Try facing an Mo/W who sprints away and uses Mend Ailment to remove crippling. Mo's by themselves are a huge pain to kill, but one that can sprint and more or less can't be crippled is twice as bad. This guy actually brought down our team, because in our effeorts to chase him down he was able to case Vengence on the teams other monk. After 5 repeats of this 2 members of my team had quit.
Edit: We also had 2 rangers, both with Pin Down.

look at how he worded it
he's the prot/healer monk
other monk (smite/healer)
the necro
other class
and as for runners, i enjoy taking them on. Its fun to herd them to exactly where you want him
2 days ago i had 20 minute stalemate with a very competent W/Mo. she couldnt touch me, and i couldnt damage her if at all. We ended it as a draw lol

The type of person who do that sort of thing tends to love every minute he spends griefing the "winning" team, so I don't know if "poor fool" is the correct term to use.
Unfortunately, the term I'd use woud draw mod attention, so I'll just have to ask you to use your imagination.

I'd assume he meant he was one of the monks with the 'myself' bit. Which is why I prefer to use (______) when in the middle of saying something for the purpose of clarification, so that it doesn't disrupt the flow of the sentence.
Nitpicking aside, snares are invaluable in the 4 vs 4 arena. YOU can run and recover using them, or you can pin a runner. Snaring warriors totally nullifies them unless they remove the snares or catch a person off guard and cripple them because all of their damage is dealt in melee.
Playing my illusion mesmer, I catch a lot of grief from warriors. Mantra of Persistance + Imagined Burden or Crippling Anguish pushes them to 40 seconds. People say necromancers control warriors best, but necro's have no snares. It's really just 2 different styles of control:
Necromancers accept melee damage, but reduce it's effectiveness. (They can also lower damage from rangers, which is a plus.)
Mesmers refuse to do so, and deny warriors from using it altogether by not allowing them to reach their target.
It's another form of control not to be taken lightly. When you're left behind from the battlefield or unable to retreat, you see the point far better.
Bear in mind, this is primarily from a 4 vs 4 random arena point of view. I haven't been to the tombs in weeks, and hardly remember what it's like anymore >.<

Yes, I was the prot/healer monk. Sorry, that was kind of confusing.

Good for you. Just so you know, people hate you. Not trying to flame, but these battles truly suck. And you are forcing me to bring skills to stop your whimpy running butt.

I agree. He should be afforded every right to bring this strategy. And a strategy it is. But, it is my right, to label it an incredibly lame strategy. But it's one which won't work against me anymore. Good luck with it, and I hope you bring it into a battle sometime soon. And I hope to see a runner again soon too

If they run, just leave. Not like winning means anything in comp arena. And if you're in a team good enough to stick around for, you should be able to kill them.

I've never had people leave when I play. They always stick around and find the fault in my build (brought a bad condition removal once) and then they kill me, and I congradulate them. Its all in good clean fun.

So, are you Neo M A T R I X or the other one? I'm very sure that I saw this, being that I sat dead in a game for 29 minutes yestarday while the ranger ran in circles. Neo chased him for awhile (29 minutes) and then gave up, but the Necro or whoever had been dead the whole time.
Pretty sure Aw Aw, the ranger, was using the IVEX Trapper build.
Were you Dez Deathdealer?

That's odd that it both happend between the 28-30 minute mark. I didn't get a screen of the counter after we had won, I was pretty bored with watching him and busy talking to the other players, but here is a shot of him when the whole enemy was still in the game, but he had been running around for about 7 minutes.

is that something to be proud of?
it just takes out the fun of arena play for both the opposition and your own team
also rangers built to be the last man running away are not only unhelpful for victory but even a burden to their team
